Badis Buxar Color Changes
Posted by Sarah on December 2, 2008
The badis buxar are finally settling in, and they seem to be swimming a little bit more than they were when we first got them.
Whenever we put something new in the tank – like a moss ball or a piece of driftwood one of them swims over and claims a perch pretty quickly.
We were putting the moss balls and the driftwood in the tank because they were infested with snails – and we thought the loaches might like the snails, but the badis buxar have also been seen chomping down on the snails as well.
We put a snail infested piece of driftwood in the tank yesterday and I was really surprised at the color change on this guy.
I think it’s a male, but I’m not sure – but these fish are usually white with gray stripes, and an occasional bit of red, but yesterday when he was perched on the driftwood he looked almost all red.
Although you can see the individual red dots in the picture, he looked uniformly red in real life – I also didn’t see the blue around the tail in real life either.
Unfortunately the clown pleco and the Queen botias have decided they like the driftwood, so the poor Badis Buxar has been banished.
There is still one Badis buxar with the darker coloration exploring the tank and occasionally perching on a moss ball, but the other 5 in the tank have their gray and white coloration.
Have you seen this in your Badis buxars?
At first we thought it might be a hunting or breeding coloration, but we aren’t sure.
What do you think it is?

Hi Sarah,
No answer to your question, I’m not familiar with this species. But your post put me in mind of something that fascinates me. Some people see an aquarium full of fish and find it utterly boring. Others can observe it and discover mysteries, miracles, details and enough questions to occupy their lifetimes. I think that is way cool. Hope you get your answer.

Hi Rick, and welcome.
It is interesting what people see in the fish tanks.
I think it all depends on how patient people are, and how interested they are in the world around them.
