When I first got my 5 celestial pearl danios, formerly known as galaxy rasboras they were very shy.

These guys were adults that I got from another fish keeper, and I put them in a 30 gallon tank with some BN plecos and their fry, and they hid all of the time.

I was pretty disappointed – I’d gotten the fish because they were so pretty, and I wanted to look at them, but they never came out.

I didn’t even see them come out for food very often.

When Jeff and I won an auction for our Pangio anguillaris some Boraras brigittae came with them.

We put them in the tank with the celestial pearl danios, and after a few days we started seing the danios zipping all over the tank.

At first we would just catch a glimpse as they darted from one hiding spot to another, but pretty soon they’d swim around in front of some of the hiding spots.

It was pretty cool!

Of course if you are going to get more fish to see if you can get your celestial pearl danios to get over their shyness, make sure the fish are compatible, and make sure they aren’t big enough to eat your CPD’s.

You wouldn’t want that to happen would you.

Do you have CPD’s?

Are they shy?

If you’ve added more fish to their aquarium, did that make them more or less shy?

I got 7 celestial pearl danios, which were formerly known as galaxy rasboras a week ago, and I’m in love .

These are tiny fish, and they’re shy.

They spend most of their time hiding behind some decorations, except for one who spends most of her time in a cup.

For a while I was worried that she was staying in there because she couldn’t get out – yeah I think my fish are smart, don’t you – but that wasn’t the case.

Celestial Pearl Danios are mop spawners, so they spawn in java moss or other plants, but they also eat their fry so most people put a couple of adults in another tank with a layer of marbles, or a spawning grate at the bottom.

The parents lay the eggs, which fall through the marbles and the parents can get them.

The adults are removed after 3-5 days, and Voila – fry.

Since my fish are still settling in (and I don’t have any more room) I’m going to leave them where they are for a while.

Hopefully we’ll have a couple of fry that survive with no interference on my part, but if not I’ll probably consider moving them to another tank for spawning purposes.

The 30 gallon they’re in needs more fish .

If you’ve got any questions, or comments, or you’d like to share your experience with these fish I’d love to hear about them – just click on “leave a comment” and tell me what’s on your mind.
