Do you have an emergency plan for your fish?

Posted by Sarah on December 15, 2008

It’s currently -15 outside according to the weather channel, and -20 according to my backyard thermometer.

Fortunately, we still have power, but there are a lot of people in the Northeast that don’t.

Although I’m not worried that our power will go out, I started thinking and realized that if it does, and we have to leave the house I’m going to be really worried about the fish.

The dogs are coming with us no matter what, and the reptiles will be kind of easy to pack up and bring along, but the fish will have to stay.

Even if we could bring them with us unless the car was warmed up there’s always the chance that they would freeze in the car.

We don’t have an emergency plan for our fish if something happens, do you?

I’ve heard that if you place towels and blankets around the tank while the power is out it will help, but I think that will only work to an extent.

I’ve known people in North Carolina and in Minnesota who’ve had their fish tanks freeze, and fish tanks that were broken during a hurricane are being blamed for releasing some of the lionfish that are now invading Florida.

I don’t want that to happen to me – or you for that matter.

If you had to leave your home because of a natural disaster or because the power was out what would you do to help your fish?

Do you have a set plan, or would you wing it?

Have you ever thought about it before?
