Plexiglass Fish Lids

Posted by Sarah on October 15, 2008

Since Jeff bought all the 29’s at the $1/gallon sale, we’ve got a lot of fish tanks that need lids.

We’re experimenting with plexiglass, to see how that works, since we can cut a few hoods out of one piece of plexiglass.

It should be interesting.

Have you used plexiglass for fish tanks before?

Yes, we have a 70 gallon tank housing a couple of turtles that used to sit up in the long term care area of our hospital. The clients loved to watch them. Unfortunately one little old lady with dementia would throw whole salads in the tank daily to feed the turtles. After a couple of weeks of daily tank cleanings, I bought some 1/4 inch plexiglass and cut 2 covers 22 x 16 for the tank. They work but the plexiglass starts sagging after a few days and needs to be flipped over.

Rick Quarton´s last blog post..Did you know?

I have plexiglass lids on mine and it was a huge mistake. They sag and I have to flip them all the time which is tricky with the filter hoses and all that stuff. Always use glass. You can find toppers at any pet store. Or Have one made at glass shop. You can buy hinges at pet store too.

i use plexiglass lids in my fishroom which is one stand, with 7 10 gals, 2 20 highs and 1 20 long. the lids are cut just to fit the tops. i have slimline 4 foot lights built into the stand.my other tanks which consist of 3 55’s 2 29’s and one 30 gal have regular tops and lights.

Rick, Craig, and Jim, thanks for your comments.

Right now we are using the lids on a 55, and we haven’t experienced any sagging, but we’ll keep a lookout on that.

Jeff couldn’t cut the filter holes out without breaking the plexiglass, so the lid is cut in a straight line and it will be easy to flip it over.

He did cut his finger on one of the edges the other day – and he wasn’t expecting that at all.

they make drill bits for plexiglass. plus gently file edge will dull so it should not cut.
