Baby Ram Update
Posted by Sarah on July 4, 2008
Happy Independence Day!
The baby rams are still going strong.
I’m really in shock - there was so much fungus on the eggs that I didn’t think anything would hatch.
The only reason that we didn’t take the slate that the eggs were on and clean it up is that Jeff was about to leave when we noticed the fungus - then when we went to clean the slate their were fry everywhere.
The fry are still going strong, swimming everywhere.
This is the largest hatch rate that we’ve ever had, and there are fry everywhere,
There have to be at least 200 fry in the tank.
Hopefully they’ll continue to do well.
The picture shows a few of the fry in front of a moss ball.
They’re so tiny, and so cute.

I would like to know what you are going to feed the blue ram fry. I have been trying to raise blue rams for 2 years with very limited success. I remove the small terracotta flower pot with the eggs from my 55 gallon tank and put it in a 10-gallon tank with about 4 inches of water, an aerator and sponge filter ( I also use RO water). If you can get them to survive the first two weeks and they begin to eat BBS, they will usually survive. I feed the 6 day old fry vinegar eels but most fry will not eat and die. I have also tried Hikari First Bites, artifical artmeia and some other small powered foods.
I have had maybe 8 spawns over the past couple years with only 10 fry surviving. Good luck and keep us updated!

Hi Don, welcome.
Right now we are feeding them Atison’s betta starter.
For our first successful batch we fed them the Atison’s betta starter, and Hikari Tropical First bites. You can read about them on the forums at Blue Rams Laying Eggs.
We still have 17 of them.
Jeff keeps the temperature in the hatching tank 82F because he read that it makes them hungrier. He turns it down some as they get older though.
Our fry and the previous fry are in a full 10 gallon with a sponge filter with a little periscope type thing that allows the water to flow out of it.
We’ve lost our last few batches too, but they were in different tanks with different setups - and gravel in the aquarium.
The 10 gallon is bare bottom, but we just got the first batch of rams out of it, and into a 20 gallon.
We’ve never used vinegar eels, and Jeff usually adds a few bbs a day after they are 7 days old to see when they will start eating it.
Good luck with your Rams, it can be frustrating to lose so many of them.
I’d love to know how yours are doing as well.
