Northern Lights Aquatics Fish Blog

I got 7 celestial pearl danios, which were formerly known as galaxy rasboras a week ago, and I’m in love :-).

These are tiny fish, and they’re shy.

They spend most of their time hiding behind some decorations, except for one who spends most of her time in a cup.

For a while I was worried that she was staying in there because she couldn’t get out - yeah I think my fish are smart, don’t you - but that wasn’t the case.

Celestial Pearl Danios are mop spawners, so they spawn in java moss or other plants, but they also eat their fry so most people put a couple of adults in another tank with a layer of marbles, or a spawning grate at the bottom.

The parents lay the eggs, which fall through the marbles and the parents can get them.

The adults are removed after 3-5 days, and Voila - fry.

Since my fish are still settling in (and I don’t have any more room) I’m going to leave them where they are for a while.

Hopefully we’ll have a couple of fry that survive with no interference on my part, but if not I’ll probably consider moving them to another tank for spawning purposes.

The 30 gallon they’re in needs more fish :-).

Bumblebee Goby Eggs

Bumblebee Goby Eggs in Shell

Bumblebee Goby Eggs in Shell

I just went to turn off the light in my bumblebee gobies (BBG) tank, and one of the gobies was in his shell - all you could see was his eye, and it was so cute, that I decided to take a picture.

I was happily snapping away - and then I looked and realized that there were eggs hanging from the top of the shell!

I am so excited!

We are out of tank space, so I am going to try to put the shell in a breeder net in the BBG tank to see if we can get some fry.

The only problem is that these guys are going to be tiny, and they swim around in the middle of the water column to eat so we have to keep the food moving so that they get enough to eat.

We noticed last week that one of the males was pale, and I was worried that he was sick, so I looked up pale bumblebee gobies online, and realized that the males get pale when they are ready to spawn.

Of course, I was excited, so I can’t tell you why I’m surprised that there are eggs now, but boy am I happy.

Here are the two reports I’ve read about spawning Bumblebee Gobies so far - Spawning the Bumblebee Goby, and Bee Keeping: Breeding the Bumblebee Goby.

Both of these reports indicate that their bumblebee gobies were in brackish water when they spawned, but mine are in freshwater with a temperature of 83F.

That may be part of why I’m so surprised :-)

As I’ve mentioned before though, I did read that these gobies were freshwater fish, and so I decided to try keep them in freshwater, even though most people say that they are brackish water fish.

Although we did have a figure 8 puffer out of the tank with the bumblebee gobies, we moved him out a week ago, because one of the gobies disappeared, and I was scared that 8-Ball ate him.

So 8-Ball had to go.

If you’ve got experience raising bumblebee gobies I’d love to hear about it.

Please leave a comment and share your experiences.

German Blue Ram Fry - 5 Month Update

German Blue Rams - 5 months old

German Blue Rams - 5 months old

We still have 17 of the German Blue Ram Fry that hatched in February.

I can’t believe that they are so big, but at the same time I can’t believe that they aren’t bigger.

We’ve moved the fry once - from a 10 gallon tank into a 20 gallon tank.

Both tanks had bare bottoms, and although we’ve tried to hatch eggs in tanks with gravel, none of the fry have survived.

The fry are in RO water now, and we are able to tell a few of the males and females apart.

They are still getting Baby brine shrimp (BBS) almost daily, because we are making it for the smaller ram fry, and we always have a ton left over.

They are also eating several different kinds of flake food, and ultracolor pellet food.

We did have a couple of losses after the first few times we fed them the pellet food, but we’d also been out of town for a day or two before that, so I’m not sure what caused the losses.

It would be nice to keep a few of them and watch them grow up, but right now we don’t have the room.

Jeff has contacted the people who have expressed interest them in before and told them the rams were ready, so …
