How do I buy Killifish?

Posted by Sarah on September 11, 2008

Brad Anderson had a great comment on the Minnesota Killie Keepers Association Show and Auction post, that I thought was worthy of it’s own post so here it is, along with my response.

How does one buy Killie fish, the lfs store here has never heard of them. I think they would be a great addition to my sons 37 and my daughters 2.5.

Hi Brad, welcome!

Unfortunately most stores don’t keep killifish in stock so your best chance at getting killifish is to order some and get them shipped to you.

Some killifish eggs need to dry out before they hatch, so you can even order killifish eggs, hatch them, and watch the fish grow up – that might be really fun for your daughter if there’s nothing else in her 2.5.

Aquabid and Ebay have a good selection of killifish, and killifish eggs, although you have to make sure you read the feedback. Some people have had trouble with the eggs not hatching.

LiveAquaria.com also has a selection of killifish. Although I haven’t ordered fish from them, I’ve heard good things from people to have.

The American Killifish Association also has a list of regional clubs whose members might have some killifish for sale.

Other local fish clubs and forums might have some as well.

Part of the reason Jeff and I are going to the Minnesota Killie Keepers Show is because we only have about 3 species available to us locally – and of course we really enjoyed seeing the killies at the Minnesota Aquarium Society’s show.

Good luck finding some killifish for your son’s and daughter’s aquariums – if you do find some please let me know where, and how you like them!

If any of you have advice for Brad please leave a comment!

Thank you!
