Clown Pleco

Posted by Sarah on August 11, 2008

Our clown plecos are the first plecos that Jeff and I bought after we got our aquariums.

We bought three of them at the same time, and the day we put them in our tank is the last day that we saw all three of them at the same time.

Our clown plecos are in a 55 gallon tank with our German Rams, Red Apistos, and rasboras.

We have several pieces of driftwood in the tank for them since they are wood eaters, and we have three cave systems in the tank.

The plecos staked out their own claim in their favorite part of the tank quickly, but they don’t seem to bother any of the other fish – or each other for that matter.

I have read reports of clown plecos that clear out the algae in their tanks, but we’ve never experienced that with our tanks.

In addition to the driftwood we also provide algae pellets, and shrimp pellets, which the rams also greedily devour.

A clown pleco sighting is always an adventure – if I see one out I always tell Jeff, who probably doesn’t get as excited as I do.

The clown plecos are fun fish, even though we don’t see them very often.

Welcome to the Northern Lights Aquatics Fish Blog

Welcome to Northern Lights Aquatics!

My husband and I are addicted to fish!

We currently have angelfish, guppies, platies, black mollies, a breeding pair of bushynose pleco and lots of fry, several types of cories, German Blue Rams,  German Golden Rams, harlequin rasboras, clown plecos, african dwarf frogs, otocinclus, a false siamese algae eater and another unidentified fish that was sold to us as a siamese algae eater.

Do you think we like fish?

In addition to all of those fish we have a salt water aquarium with a yellow tang, and two clownfish.

When people come to visit and see all of the fish tanks they think we’re nuts – but hey, it’s fun, isn’t it?
